LVT vs. Laminate: Which Floor is Right for Your Pontefract Kitchen or Bathroom?
Two of the most popular hard flooring choices right now are luxury vinyl tile (LVT) and laminate. Both look fantastic, both are available at great price points, and both are a significant step up from old-fashioned vinyl or worn carpet in kitchens and bathrooms. But they’re not the same product — and choosing the wrong one for your room can cause real problems down the line. Here’s what you need to know before you decide.
What’s the Difference?
LVT is a PVC-based product through and through. It’s fully waterproof — not just water resistant — which makes it suitable for rooms with high moisture levels, splashes, and the occasional spill that doesn’t get mopped up immediately. Laminate, on the other hand, has a high-density fibreboard (HDF) core. It’s designed to be water resistant, meaning it can handle surface moisture, but prolonged contact with standing water or high humidity can cause it to swell, warp, or lift at the joints.
That distinction matters a great deal depending on where you’re laying it.
Which is Best for Kitchens and Bathrooms?
For bathrooms, LVT is the clear choice. Steam, condensation, and splashing around the bath or shower mean moisture levels are consistently high, and laminate simply isn’t designed for that environment long-term. LVT will handle it without any issues.
For kitchens, it’s a closer call. Most modern laminates perform well in kitchens as long as spillages are dealt with promptly and there’s no leaking appliance left unattended. However, if you want genuine peace of mind — particularly if you have young children or a busy household — LVT gives you that extra layer of confidence.
For living rooms, hallways, and bedrooms, laminate is an excellent option. It tends to feel slightly firmer underfoot, which many people prefer for larger spaces, and the range of wood-effect finishes available is superb.
How Do They Compare on Cost?
| LVT | Laminate | |
|---|---|---|
| Waterproof | ✓ Fully | Water resistant only |
| Best for | Kitchens, bathrooms, any room | Living rooms, hallways, bedrooms |
| Underfoot feel | Softer, quieter | Firmer |
| Typical lifespan | 15–25 years | 10–20 years |
| Price range | Mid to premium | Entry level to mid |
Both are available across a wide price range, and both represent excellent value compared to natural wood or stone. LVT tends to sit slightly higher in price per square metre, but the durability and waterproofing often justify the difference in wet areas.
